Reconstruction of the breast can be performed after a mastectomy (removal of the breast). A mastectomy is usually performed because of tumors.
There are a number of plastic surgical possibilities in this case.
Volume and shape must be restored (many surgeons finish reconstruction at this stage), but the nipple and areola complex must also be repaired afterwards.
