When talking about mammoplasty we shouldn’t forget about the male breast. Larger than average, feminine breasts may cause issues for men. Both the glandular and adipose tissue can increase in volume and can be corrected by performing a reduction or by removing the excess tissue depending on the cause.

Gynecomasty is genetic but can be acquired through using anabolic steroids and other medication.

In some cases after puberty the two breasts differ in size and do not improve with age. It is common for the two previously symmetrical breasts to change in size after childbirth. In extreme cases such as Poland syndrome one of the breast may be completely absent.

Procedures focused on correcting breast asymmetry vary depending on the type of correction needed, the larger breast may be reduced or the smaller one may be augmented to match the other, both breasts can be corrected at once also.

Many surgical solutions belong in this category.

The nipple can be corrected if it is too large, if there are protruding parts on it. In some cases it sinks and will not repair itself and cannot be repaired surgically either.

The areola can also be corrected if it is too large or is deform in shape or if too many glands can be seen and felt on it.

Reconstruction of the breast can be performed after a mastectomy (removal of the breast). A mastectomy is usually performed because of tumors.

There are a number of plastic surgical possibilities in this case.

Volume and shape must be restored (many surgeons finish reconstruction at this stage), but the nipple and areola complex must also be repaired afterwards.

What you must know about breast reduction as a type of mammoplasty is that the while during a breast lift we tighten and literally lift the glandular tissue, but during a breast reduction we take the desired amount of tissue and remove it from the posterior surface of the breast making nursing in the future still possible.

Breast lifts are also considered mammoplasty and is usually performed to correct the sagging or deformity of breasts due to childbirth, nursing or drastic weight loss.

This is always due to the inadequate function of the connective tissue that provides a supporting frame for the breasts and is never caused by weak muscle tone, therefore exercising alone will not help change the shape of the breasts.

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly heard of and performed surgical procedures and means the enhancement of the breasts by using implants. It is suggested in cases of small or underdeveloped breasts or breast that have become soft and smaller in size due to nursing. If the two breasts differ in size or shape this can be a solution in making them symmetrical.
